About Us

Welcome to Parakeet Landing!

Our Story

A three-hour tour... a three-hour tour! Gilligan, the Skipper and the gang started out on a three-hour tour, which as we all know, ended up being a completely unexpected journey. Well, as we look around at all the parakeets that surround us today, it’s much the same with us!

It all began with our then 8-year old saving her weekly allowance to (“PLEASE, dad, PLEASE!”) purchase one English parakeet as a pet. Her older siblings experienced bird-raising as they grew up, but our youngest never had the opportunity. So, as we gave in, we went from one parakeet, to two, to three; they took a liking to each other, and BOOM, we've got babies everywhere! Too cold to put them outside, we kept them indoors where we've had the wonderful opportunity to see the bird's social and family dynamics at play, up close.

One such family dynamic was our mated pair, Crystal and Twister's, first clutch. Devoted parents, we noticed right away when they started to treat one of the babies differently. And when I say differently, I mean they outright began to shun it. They had noticed something different about him. It took us a little longer, but we would all come to see how different he truly was. The shunned baby turned out to have a rare genetic disorder nicknamed, "Feather Duster Syndrome", due to an overabundance of feathers, causing it to look very much like a feather duster. (Read more here.) Research offered us very little on how to properly care for him, so we decided to document his life and share our experience with others. Thus we have, Parakeet Landing!

History and Experience

We have had various birds, parrots and English parakeets for decades along with standard budgies, usually in an outdoor aviary. The English budgies seemed to be a little calmer and we would bring them into the house to have them as pets. Parakeets overall are flying monkeys and always entertaining, perfect for our family!

Hobbyist

We are hobbyists not professional breeders, we love birds and the sounds they make in the home and yard. We do not raise birds for profit.
